Visual Communications - Illustration Week 2!!

For our project for this week, we have moved onto illustrating our metaphors, which I'm finding a little bit more difficult than typography.

While making my mind maps I started looking at the idea of global warming being a snowball effect - it gets bigger and we may or may not be able to control it - and I'm thinking of using this to help me illustrate my metaphor.

I'm looking at places you wouldn't normally find snowballs e.g. the desert so I'm looking at sand as well as snow. I started experimenting on photoshop trying to morph sand into snow. Bare in my mind its my very first attempt at photoshop :P

Visual Communications - Typography Week 1!!

1st week in graphics and we're starting off with a typography project. My metaphor is 'snowball effect' which in short means to get bigger and out of control.

I started researching type and experimenting with materials in which to write my metaphor like flour ( to get the look of snow) and glue gun ( as it looks cold and icy)

I began to look at the colours I associate with snow - whites and icy blues. I started to recreate my metaphor using wool. I started off with a single white strand and as the word continued I added more  and more coloured strands so by the end of the word, it was much more complicated and messy than when it originally started.

I'm going to adjust this type so the words get bigger as they go along and have the threads messier to communicate the snowball effect.

Clutter Mini Project!!

Today we had a one day mini project based on our interpretation of clutter. For my clutter I chose the fairy lights left over from Christmas in the corner of the kitchen of our apartment.

This is the image I decided to base all my prints on, focusing mainly on shape and colour for monoprinting and using the drypoint for the leads of the lights.

Here are my final clutter prints...

Monoprinting and Drypoint!!

I started making images of milk bottles and supermarkets this week. The first 2 pictures are of monoprints and the last pictures of milk bottles was done using drypoint.

I plan on photocopying this drypoint and maybe cutting a life size calf shape out of them all.

Here are some drypoints of a supermarket aisle with some cows monoprinted over them.

Print!!!!

This is the end of the first week of my print elective and it has been pretty interesting and enjoyable. Our theme was Space and I began looking at our impact on certain spaces. After some brainstorming I settled on the idea of looking at spaces where people use the natural resources to make it a profitable space and focused on the idea of farming. I also looked at the idea of consumerism and how the cows on the farm are just seen as a way of making money.

I started off the week by doing some monoprints of cows. Some prints have been made by wiping away the ink off the acetate and others were draw through types of monoprints. I focused on the image of the cow and also incorporated euro symbols to link in the idea of consumerism.
