As it is a subject
that has always captured my imagination, I have decided to focus on politics
and the Irish Government for my semester long project. Their decisions and
plans affect every citizen in the country for better or worse, and a lot of
their policies to sort out the state of our country and economy have long
lasting effects on everyone. After all the broken promises and cuts imposed by
the government, many people have switched off to the government out of anger
and annoyance and do not want to hear any of what’s going on with their plans
and policies as they are fed up with their bad decisions.
For my semester long project, I want to make people
aware off what’s going on with the government, but in a funny way as there is a
lot of ill feeling towards our politicians in the country. Poking fun at an
issue is a clever way of informing people while also identifying with their
grievances. I feel the best way I can do
this is by creating a boyband persona for the main ministers in government:
‘Wrong Direction’. Today, celebrity
culture is a huge part of our world and many people take more notice of gossip
columns than actual important news. I decided to mimic the campaign and image
of the world famous boyband ‘One Direction’ and transfer it to the government
ministers. I plan to use CDs, posters, t-shirts,
newspaper articles, gossip magazine columns and other merchandise and branding
in combination with printmaking techniques to engage people with government
plans and policies. Having talked it through with my tutors, I will start my project off on a serious note to build cohesive imagery before moving onto the more humourous side.
